1820 - Don Maximo Alanis, soldier in the Spanish Army, raised horses and cattle and became the first to own property in the Westwood area.
1843 - Don Maximo Alanis obtained ranch title from the Mexican governor and called it "San Jose de Buenos Aires." This area was 4,438 acres which covered the area between Sepulveda Blvd. to Beverly Hills.
1860 to 1910 - "San Jose de Buenos Aires" changed ownership many times during these years.
1919 - "San Jose de Buenos Aires" was bought by Arthur Letts, founder of the Broadway and Bullock's department stores.
1920's - The Janss Brothers, Edwin and Harold, purchased the area and were in charge of building the area into "one of the most unusual business districts in the United States."
It was during this time that UCLA was also looking for a new site on which to expand, and chose the Westwood area formerly known as the "Beverly site."
